Where do I even start with marketing my small business?

Everyone has an opinion on what you should be doing. Post more. Run ads. Get on TikTok. Fix your SEO. Send a newsletter. For a business owner already stretched thin, that pile of advice is more paralysing than helpful. The fix isn’t doing all of it. It’s picking one thing and starting there.

Start with one goal, not five

“Get more customers” isn’t specific enough to act on. “Get five more enquiries a month from people who’ve never heard of us” is. A single, specific goal tells you what to actually measure, and stops you chasing every channel at once out of vague anxiety that you’re missing something.

Pick one channel and get good at it before adding more

Trying to run social media, ads, SEO, and email all at once, badly, rarely beats doing just one of them properly. Pick the one channel most likely to reach the customers you actually want, based on where they already spend time, and get that working properly before spreading into anything else.

A simple one-page plan you can build in an afternoon

Write down your one goal, your one channel, what you’ll actually post or do each week, and how you’ll know if it’s working (enquiries, calls, bookings, not just likes). That’s a real plan. It doesn’t need to be longer than a page, and having it written down beats having it vaguely in your head.

When it makes sense to bring in outside help

If you’ve tried to keep this going consistently and it keeps slipping because the business itself has to come first, that’s not a failure. It’s just a sign the plan needs someone else executing it, not a sign the plan was wrong.

Marketing doesn’t have to mean doing everything. It means doing the right one thing consistently, long enough for it to actually work. If you’d rather have that plan built for you properly, see Marketing Strategy Session.
